Reporting on the latest and best tech news for you.

HP is looking into getting back into the mobile hardware game, according to a new report from ReadWrite which the Verge says is being confirmed from their own sources. HP famously bought webOS and then brought a tablet to market based on that Palm-developed platform, the TouchPad, which ended up being a dismal failure that the company shut down very quickly.

HP had also launched a smartphone, the Veer 4G based on webOS, but that also proved ineffective at capturing the attention of consumers. The company is apparently still looking to get back into the hardware game after a hiatus spanning a couple of years, however, with a new tablet featuring an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, which ReadWrite pegs for an imminent announcement, and is also considering Android-based smartphone for future development. Verge reports that the timeline sounds good, but scheduling could change for a tablet launch.

After HP CEO Meg Whitman took over, she announced that the company would ultimately offer a smartphone to keep up with the fact that for many in the developing world, such a device is now their first and maybe only computer. That launch isn’t planned for 2013, however, Whitman later stated.

Last night was the official TC Disrupt Pitch-Off in NYC, where three lucky startups won tickets to the Disrupt NY conference in April, one of which will get a spot on the Startup Alley floor.

Over 20 companies competed, and over 800 attendees showed up to partake in the night of beer, pizza, and tech talk. Each pitch-off company was given 60 seconds to pitch their startup without the help of a demo, and then votes from the panel were tabulated alongside an audience choice vote.

In the end, 3DLT took home the first prize for their 3D printing file marketplace, while PaddleYou and Talkz were runner ups.

BlackBerry PlayBook takes the App out of BlackBerry World, puts SMS into Bridge

It isn't all about the Z10, you know. BlackBerry just gave PlayBook owners some equal time in the sun with a new (if unceremoniously titled) 2.1.0.1526 update. The release puts the tablet through the same BlackBerry World rebranding we've seen on the Z10 along with truly functional improvements, such as support for in-app payments and the addition of SMS chats through BlackBerry Bridge. Less conspicuous audio and browser upgrades lurk underneath. While it's not the BlackBerry 10 upgrade that some would crave, the patch is proof the company still has love for its original QNX-based gadget.

Looks like there's a second act for Apple's "silly sideshow."

Another Apple shareholder is suing Apple, Reuters reported today. This time, it's over Apple's executive compensation policy, in addition to the company's intent to eliminate preferred stock for investors.

Pennsylvania resident Brian Gralnick has filed suit against Apple in an attempt to stop Apple from holding a shareholder vote on the two matters. The vote is scheduled for February 27. Gralnick has been a shareholder since 2007, but it's unclear how much of a stake in Apple he owns.

Google already tipped its hand on this one, but those looking for some widgets with their Google Now can get their fix today with the latest update to the Google Search app for Android. Brad Feld, the Boulder, Colorado-based entrepreneur and early stage investor, is well known for helping to encourage new tech and entrepreneurial ecosystems in areas outside of the well-trodden Silicon Valley region.

The most recent place on which he’s set his sights? Kansas City.

The Kansas City metropolitan area (which spans both Kansas and Missouri) is of course home to the first implementation of Google Fiber, an Internet service provider project which is purportedly 100 times faster than broadband thanks to a 1-gigabit fiber optic cable installation. Google began rolling out Fiber in Kansas City late last year, and this obviously has given Kansas City renewed potential to be an ideal home for startups.

Another World now available on BB10, several other classics on the way

Eric Chahi's seminal game work, Another World, is now available on BlackBerry 10 devices (so ... uh, those of you with a Z10, though it also works on PlayBook). And not just any version, but the 20th Anniversary Edition, which adds updated graphics, a remastered soundtrack, and some gesture controls. The game's one of several titles that publisher DotEmu is bringing to BB10, including notoriously difficult shooter R-Type. "Another World 20th Anniversary is our first title on Blackberry. It's currently available on Playbook and Z10, and in the upcoming weeks on Q10," DotEmu CEO Xavier Liard tells us. As for the future? "Of course we are considering bringing all our Android games to BB10, but the next game to be most likely released would be R-Type." Given that DotEmu also publishes Neo-Geo titles on Android, it's not a surprise that the company is also considering bringing those titles over, though there's nothing to announce just yet. "We can't say yet if it will be on BB10 or not as it is SNK Playmore decision," CTO Romain Tisserand says.

With Another World priced at $5 -- a dollar more than its iOS version -- we expect similar pricing across the board. But then again, we always hope it'll be less expensive to re-buy 20-year-old games. The price of nostalgia, eh?

Beercade

Battle for your beer.

(Credit: McKinney)

In the world of The Last Barfighter, nothing is just handed to you. You must earn your cold beer with your feet and fists of fury. You must be faster, more nimble, and more powerful than your opponent. You must conquer in order to quaff.

The Beercade is like a microbrew-loving gamer's dream come to life. This creation of advertising group McKinney is an old-school arcade game combined with a beer dispenser. Everything was made in-house, from the arcade cabinet to the game itself.
