Julie Uhrman, the CEO/Founder of the smash Kickstarter-project-turned-gaming-console known as OUYA, was the third keynote speaker at SXSW Interactive 2013. Interviewed by The Verge’s Joshua Topolsky, the two dove in the intricacies and challenges of crowd funding and creating a new hardware startup.

For the uninformed, OUYA is a $99 gaming platform/console — based on Android OS — that is an alternative to major gaming platforms by Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony.

As the conversation began, Julie and Joshua discussed how games and gaming are changing and that OUYA wants to make it possible for developers to bring many more kinds of games to the living room.

Valve’s Steam Box initiative will probably not end up being a single device, but a platform approach which includes a variety of hardware from different OEMs. The first such device is available now for pre-order from Xi3, for the hefty price of $999.99 (or $899.99 right now with a $100 pre-order discount). At that price, it’s not likely to sway anyone considering an Xbox, but it shows that Valve and its partners might be pulling a Google by showing the world the top end of the market before they launch more practically priced gadgets.

The Xi3 Piston is a gaming-optimized personal computer, with a small, portable enclosure that contains a 128GB SSD and 8GB of RAM within, with upgrade options to either 256 or 512GB of flash storage (for a price). The Piston is set for a late 2013 delivery date, and boasts a 3.2GHz quad core processor. Little else is know about the gadget, but it will be designed specifically to play nice with Steam and that software’s Big Picture mode, thanks in part to an investment from Newell’s company. Other details of what’s inside the hand-holdable case (and how exactly it’ll integrate Steam) will come as the official launch date nears, so this isn’t only a pre-order for big spenders, but for gamblers, too.

The Piston will most likely be among the top-tier of upcoming devices that can wear the “Steam Box” moniker according to the Verge, so don’t get too freaked out if you don’t have $1,000 to spend on a gaming rig. Newell’s approach to the Steam Box seems to involve creating a platform that’s all about extending the reach of Steam to as many as possible, not shutting it down behind a high cost of entry. It’s also worth noting that despite the Piston’s small size, it’s also going to be upgradeable, which is a big selling point when you’re talking about a home console, which often has a shelf life of 10 years or more.

Following the announcement in February that Rovio would be introducing a cartoon series called “Angry Birds Toons” later this month, the company today revealed that the cartoons would actually be bundled inside Rovio’s Angry Birds mobile games.

Starting the weekend of March 16-17th, the new cartoons will appear in a dedicated channel in Rovio’s gaming lineup, as well as on select on-demand channel providers, smart TVs, other connected devices, and on select TV networks around the world. In the U.S., the company has partnered with Comcast, which will run the cartoon on all its video platforms, including Xfinity on Demand, online at Xfinity.com/tv, and in the Xfinity TV Player app on Samsung Smart TVs, with Roku and other platforms to follow.

Elsewhere in the world, Angry Birds toons will run on FOX8 in Australia, JEI TV in Korea, ANTV in Indonesia, Cartoon Network in India, MTV3 Juniori and MTV3 in Finland, the Children’s Channel in Israel, 1+1 networks in Ukraine, Gulli and Canal J in France, SUPER RTL in Germany, TV2 in Norway, Canal 13 in Chile and Gloob in Brazil. Activision, Paramount Pictures, BlackBerry, and Sony Pictures are partnering with Rovio at the launch of the Angry Birds Toons channel.

Gaming isn’t quite cyclical, thought it would seem that the big trend this winter is to remake old-school games from the 90′s for newer platforms. EA just released a brand new version of a personal childhood favorite, SimCity, and now it would appear that Age Of Empires II HD is coming to Steam’s platform.

Steam is an online game seller that acts quite a bit like an App Store for PC game titles. The company has evolved past the desktop to mobile apps, as well as offering Windows non-gaming apps, but remains focused on bringing the best of gaming to the cloud.

That said, Age Of Empires II HD will be available exclusively on Steam starting on April 9, with a price tag of $19.99. However, those who are itching with anticipation can pre-order and start playing on April 5, with a 10 percent discount. The game was originally developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft, but unfortunately Ensemble is no longer assembling.

Now that it’s spent some time trying to navigate the gap between churning out PC accessories and actual, honest-to-goodness gaming computers, the folks at Razer have seen fit to look for some experts for guidance. To that end, Razer announced earlier today that it has appointed entrepreneur and former VoodooPC founder Rahul Sood to serve as advisor to the company’s board of directors.

While Sood’s recent turns as GM of Microsoft’s Bing Fund angel fund/incubator and as head of Microsoft’s new global startups group have a strictly entrepreneurial bent, he’s no stranger to the sorts of issues that Razer (and CEO Min-Liang Tan) are facing. If anything, he seems like a natural fit for the role given his own experience crafting a business out of game-centric hardware — his first venture, VoodooPC, operated as a high-end gaming PC boutique of sorts before being acquired by HP in mid-2006.

His recent endeavors have taken him away from his roots as a champion of PC gaming performance, but Sood still seems to look at the PC gaming space with some degree of fondness. In a statement released by Razer earlier today, Sood noted that he saw the company as “the spiritual successor to [his] previous work at VoodooPC,” a sentiment he first expressed publicly after spending some time with Razer’s pricey Blade gaming laptop last year.

Angry Birds may be one of the most popular apps of all time, but it’s also not exactly a spring chicken. And so, to boost its downloads, publisher Rovio is now making the original iOS versions for iPhone and iPad free and getting named the App of the Week on the App Store. According to Ouriel Ohayon of Appsfire, who was the first to have spotted this, this is the first time Rovio has taken down the paywall on these versions.

The moves come as some have observed that Rovio has of late fallen out of the top 80 highest grossing iPhone apps — for the first time since May 2010. This, too, may be a reason why Rovio has chosen the above image, touting it as the number-one app of all time, as the splash page for the app as it appears on the App Store.

OUYA, the Kickstarter-funded Android gaming console, has already shipped developer consoles, but had yet to specify an exact date when backers could expect their production devices. Today, the company announced that it will be shipping the first OUYA consoles out to backers beginning March 28, ahead of a June retail launch.

The gaming hardware startup shipped its first developer consoles starting December 28, in keeping with its anticipated deadlines from the project outset. A March 28 date for final hardware is also in keeping with OUYA’s original timeline, which called for a March 2013 launch window for OUYA consoles and controllers.

OUYA says to expect it to take “a few weeks” for shipments to be sent out to all backers, who will receive tracking numbers and estimated delivery dates once the consoles begin leaving for their destinations.

Back in late 2009, Zynga quietly acquired a startup called MyMiniLife, a maker of virtual worlds that allowed players to outfit their characters and homes with virtual lamps, furniture and so on.

You couldn’t see it at the time, but the MyMiniLife acquisition was a company-making deal. It spawned FarmVille, the monster hit that put social gaming and Zynga on the map. At the same time, MyMiniLife was starting to run out of money. Ultimately, it turned out to be a win-win.

“While Zynga had some success with Mafia Wars and Poker, they weren’t necessarily in a dominant position,” said Amitt Mahajan, who was one of FarmVille’s co-creators. “They were not yet known for building these isometric worlds. Playfish was catching up, but the reusable game engine behind FarmVille gave them a leg up.”

Kristian Segerstrale, the EA executive who was in charge of leading the company into a games-as-a-service era, has just left the company. CEO John Riccitiello just announced it in an internal memo and said that EA COO Peter Moore is taking on his responsibilities.

Segerstrale came into EA through its $400 million acquisition of Playfish, a social games developer that he co-founded with a high school friend Sebastien de Halleux.

That deal was a watershed moment for the social gaming industry and an acknowledgment that virtual goods and currencies could represent a significant new revenue model for the industry. Disney quickly followed on with a $750 million deal to buy Facebook games developer Playdom. Although Zynga has had a rocky year following its debut as a public company, most of the largest and highest-grossing developers on iOS and Android employ a free-to-play model that includes purchases of virtual currencies and goods.

Nvidia only recently introduced its Tegra 4i processor, which pairs Tegra 4 power with integrated LTE — an Nvidia first for mobile chips — into a single system-on-a-chip. The company is now showing off the processor in action on in-house developed reference smartphone hardware called the Phoenix, which is actually present as a working model at MWC in Spain, as you can see in the video above. The Tegra 4i is Nvidia’s attempt to bring the power of its new platform to mainstream devices, and the Phoenix, with its 5-inch, 1080p display, 13-megapixel camera and integrated LTE radio is a look at what OEM partners will be able to achieve building with the Nvidia processor as its powerhouse. The phone is also only 8mm thin thanks to the SoC’s tiny design, but it has a 60-core GPU that bests the Tegra 3 by a factor of two, while also improving battery life and web browsing compared to Nvidia’s previous generation architecture. Android game developers and startups looking to make use of enhancements in mobile camera and video tech will probably get the biggest kick out of the Tegra 4i demo, which shows off some of its graphics processing prowess. The camera is now capable of providing instant still HDR that doesn’t have to be turned on and off, as well as HDR video and HDR panorama photos. The demo video shows off photo and video rendering, which really gives a good sense of just how good devs will be able to make media look on devices based on Nvidia’s new mobile platform.
