How To Fix "Not Authorized" Error In Pidgin Using Google Talk

Recently I started to receive the ‘Not Authorized’ error problem when I tried to connect through Pidgin using Google Talk.

At first, I could not understand the reason behind it and tried to click the ‘Re-enable’ button multiple times but it was of no use. Then I Googled a bit and realized that Pidgin gives this kind of a problem while connecting to Gmail accounts that have less secure apps OFF. And this happens to be my case.

To make Pidgin connect and sign-in properly, users need to turn on the less secure apps option in your Google accounts. As Google explains it:

"Some apps and devices use less secure sign-in technology, which makes your account more vulnerable. You can turn off access for these apps, which we recommend, or turn on access if you want to use them despite the risks. Learn more

To get this done and connect through Pidgin using Google Talk follow the below steps:

1. Click the following link and sign in with your Gmail address https://myaccount.google.com/lesssecureapps

2. Just click on the radio button to turn it change it from the off position to the on position.

5. Click on the Re-enable button in Pidgin if you still have it opened, or once you open Pidgin you should be able to connect with no issues.

I hope this helps someone out in virtual land. Leave a comment if this helped or if you ran into any issues.
