As a side note this happened over 36 years ago and this is the first time I am sharing the story publicly on my website and Quora.
In reality or unreality we will encounter some form of the “out of the ordinary”, for which science, skeptics and religion will need to explain “what happened”. We must also remember that medical research is still at an early stage of exploring this phenomenon and may yet provide vital understanding on this subject. It is quite possible that physical/psychological and spiritual explanations can complement each other. What am I trying to write about here?
If you haven't heard of an NDE (Near Death Experience) let me explain. An NDE for short is the experience of witnessing ones own self leaving their body and floating away or going through a tunnel of light. This usually occurs when there is an accident or medical emergency where the person or body is dying or basically dead. In my case I was dead from being involved in an automobile accident where my '68 Ford Mustang slammed into an concrete embankment doing 90 MPH. The car went from being a beautiful car to being a pancake in seconds.
Before the car hit the embankment (this is like milliseconds) I felt something push me towards the console preventing me from sitting up straight in the passenger seat away from the windshield and engine that came thrusting inwards. When the car hit the embankment my body was forced into the automatic stick shift which then broke and I felt a piercing pain in my chest. The picture below will give you an idea of what the interior of my ’68 Ford Mustang looked like, which basically has no protection from a 90 mph crash.
Remember at that time (1981) we didn't have air bags in cars and Ford didn't design airbags in 1968 Ford Mustangs either. At the moment of impact the car hit the embankment and it went into a flip. From what I understand it flipped 3 times and landed on its roof and skidded 100 feet. From eyewitness stories who observed the accident. At the moment the car was flipping I didn't know what was going to happen but that I probably will die. In that split second I thought of dying I had a feeling of peace come over me. When the car stopped flipping, it landed on its roof and all I remember hearing before I blacked out was the sound of an 18 wheeler zooming by. Later on I will come to realize that this trucker called in the accident and reported the incident to local police.
What my '68 Ford Mustang looked like after the accident.
Once dead I was floating through a beautifully created cool mist that appeared to be a star field and was wonderfully peaceful. It appeared to be a half minute before I started to see images that appeared to be people. In that short period of time I had no peripheral vision but only could focus straight ahead of me and I was floating with no control of my direction. When I started to focus more on the people that started to appear, they seemed to be dressed in Civil War period era clothes and they were walking towards me. A woman in a dress and holding an umbrella above her head was approaching me and her face appeared like it had an "oh no" expression on it. There were a few other people who appeared to be soldiers looking at me as I was lying in a muddy ditch and appeared to be shot up and dying. The soldiers were closer than the civilians but I could make this all out in my 360 degree view.
Immediately upon coming into that scene and having focus of the situation for a few seconds, I heard the expression "Not Yet" and I awoke for a brief moment in an ambulance that was resuscitating me back to life. After being resuscitated I then passed out. The next morning I awoke in a hospital and the doctors there were amazed that I was alive. They were also amazed that I had no physical injuries, no internal bleeding, no scratches. Nothing was wrong with me. All I had was the memory of traveling to another place and not knowing what to think.
A person experienced in the New Age realm might call it the transformation of human state to spirit state. All I know is that this was a vivid transformation and was apparently real. In high school I hated history, did not even care to learn it and received an F grade in the classes I attended. So my knowledge of the Civil War was severely limited.
Back to the scene of the accident. I learned that they had to use the claws of life to extract me from my car. The reason being is that there was no way to get me out of the car since it was crushed due to being flipped so many times. The rescue squad needed to cut the car open and extract me and I was told that it took 30 minutes. So I was dead for 30 minutes or more until I was resuscitated.
Meaning I was in that other realm fighting in the Civil War and for my life while all these unknowings were happening to me. I also was dead in the realm where the Mustang crashed. Since I have studied physics, what comes to mind is which is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox, devised by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. Research it if you need to know more.
Prior NDE Experience
This would not be my first time going through an NDE. I have had several, drug overdose, skateboarding accident, boot camp fatality, but let me take you back to a accident that I was involved in when I was 8 years old and this would be 13 years before I crashed my '68 Mustang into the embankment.
This time I was hit by a car when I was 8 years old. The car was traveling at 50 MPH (miles per hour). My body was struck and mangled like a marionette that has had its strings all twisted and was no longer able to animate. My right leg is broken, with the femur thrust through the knee cap. My right hip is fractured, my skull is fractured and I suffer from a , which is pumping blood into my brain like helium, as if I were a balloon ready to rise from that pitiful place on the ground that this car had laid me. I am swallowing my tongue and if it wasn't for the fast thinking of a pharmacist that owned a store near the accident, I would have choked to death. This pharmacist ran out and used a tongue depressor to keep my tongue from being swallowed.
Except I do not rise and I do not know what has happened. The force of the car hitting me has blanked out all that I have known, including pain, for the past eight years. I am immediately rendered comatose, and will remain that way for the next thirteen days. By the way this is the anniversary of the car accident (05/25/1968) - which is also around the anniversary of Robert Kennedy being assassinated (06/05/1968).
All hope is given up on me, the doctors and nurses can not repair this indistinguishable human form. The Priests are called and the last rites are given. This little boy is no more.
Thirteen days later I awake to see my beautiful mother pulling up the blinds in my hospitable room. Filling it with the richness of the morning sun, this illuminates her beauty and the pink hue of the room. I am told that I had died twice during that time. Not in a way that an 8 year old would need to hear it, but in a way that an 8 year old would understand. To me as a child of only 8 years I do not comprehend what death would be. For me all I know is GI Joe dolls and that cute little girl who keeps sitting by me in 3rd grade class ever since I bought her a cheap finger ring from the gumball machine. As I look around I see all kinds of things that an 8 year old would want; balloons, presents of all kinds and cards from my beloved family and cherished classmates and friends. Still I do not realize what I have been through; I just want to go home.
I was told later that my Last Rites were given, and if you are born and raised Catholic, you will know that this means a Priest comes and stands over your almost lifeless body and performs some prayers to God, telling Him that you’re okay and to make sure St. Peter opens the gates of Heaven for you. At that time I thought it was cool that I got them, but through life I found out that the Last Rites are a man made ritual and that God never initiated or endorsed this ritual.
As I awake, I stare down and see my right leg elevated in a leg cast and floating about 10 inches above my hospital bed in a sling. My movement is limited since my right leg is broke, my hip and skull are fractured and all I want to do is go home and hang out with my twin brother and run around and have fun like a little 8 year old should be having. This will not happen for at least 2 1/2 months and still I wouldn't be able to run right away. I am told that at certain times I would scream "chocolate covered cheeseburgers" while I was in my coma of 13 days. I don't know how that tastes but if they were serving this up in the realm I visited then it must taste good. And for a kid of 8 years old it is probably a delicious treat.
What Do Studies Show
It is likely that for as long as man has been aware of the certainty of death he has contemplated the possibility of survival. There is nothing particularly new about the notion that people can "die" and live to tell the tale. Myths and legends recounting these tales go back well over 2,000 years. But it was not until 1973 when the American psychiatrist Dr. Raymond Moody collected the first contemporary accounts of near death experiences () that it was recognized that these were worthy of serious scientific study. ("Living to tell the tale.")
A lot of study has gone into Near Death Experiences because it is a phenomenon that scientists, religious personnel, and skeptics find hard to prove or disprove. Actually I should say that they try to prove it to serve they own mentally of what is really going on. As in this society there are certain rules and livelihoods we should follow, or we are banned and rejected as outcasts. Many studies in humans suggest that altered temporal lobe functioning, especially functioning in the right temporal lobe, is involved in mystical and religious experiences.
These results suggest that altered temporal lobe functioning may be involved in the near-death experience and that individuals who have had such experiences are physiologically distinct from the general population. (“”)
Due to the unpredictable occurrence of a NDE, research into the etiology of NDEs remains handicapped by the difficulty of obtaining direct evidence. (".") Ronald Siegel and Susan Blackmore, psychologists who use neuroscientific models to explain NDEs as hallucinations, coy under specific attack for what Kellehear deems their tendentious misuse of language. (Balk pg. 314) He expands this criticism to a critique of much of modern science itself, which he considers to be increasingly trapped in doctrinaire materialism, devoted to theory short of context, and overspecialized to the point of irrelevance. He concludes that neuroscientists in their approach to the NDE have proven to be at least as culture-bound as the New Agers-who, in their cultivation of the non-rational and their embrace of NDE’s, react against them.
Fast Forward 26 Years
Back to the Mustang accident. Remember I had told you that I heard the expression "Not Yet" during my travels to the other realm. Well fast forward from 1981 when my Mustang accident happened to 2007 and I am working as a senior system administrator for a technical company. I am working the mid day shift and one night I leave work at midnight mentally and physically exhausted. All I want to do is go home and rest. I fall asleep in my bed and leave the TV on the History Channel so I can fall asleep faster since watching TV helps this process.
At approximately 6:06am EST I hear a phrase "Not Yet" and I awake to see that the History Channel is airing a episode on NDE's and Reincarnation. I come to learn that a Connecticut Assistant Fire Chief had a reincarnation episode. Perhaps the greatest circumstantial evidence supporting the reality of reincarnation without using hypnotic regression, is the account of Jeffrey Keene () , an Assistant Fire Chief in Westport, Connecticut.
After a series of synchronicity of events and subsequent research, Keene discovered many uncanny parallels between his life and the life of a Civil War general named John B. Gordon. The photo on the left shows a comparison between the facial appearance of Jeffrey Keene and General John Gordon. The similarities between the two go far beyond mere coincidence. What makes Keene's story unique from most accounts of reincarnation is that Keene's story contains evidence that did not involve hypnotic regression. Instead, Keene's evidence of a past-life came from his own life experience involving a series of unusual synchronized events.
The account of Jeffrey Keene is documented in his book, Someone Else's Yesterday. This book details Keene's amazing journey of accepting the fact that he was being guided to discover his past life as General Gordon. Long before Keene became convinced of his past life, unusual events kept reinforcing its reality. Through subsequent years of research and travel, Keene has amassed compelling evidence of his former life. Keene and his past-life evidence were profiled in the A&E documentary entitled, Beyond Death.
An independent file documentary entitled, In Another Life, also profiles Keene's story. His story and photos can also be found on Keene's website and the website of Dr. Walter Semkiw. Dr. Semkiw is the author of the book, which contains observations of Keene's case. Keene had never given reincarnation much thought until the extraordinary became ordinary and strange occurrences throughout his life started to make sense.
Below is the uncanny resemblance between General Gordon and Jeffrey Keene.
Keene's story began on May, 1991, while on vacation with his wife looking for antiques. They stopped in Sharpsburg, Maryland, where the Civil War battle of Antietam was fought. Though Keene had never read a book on the Civil War before or had any affinity for that era, he felt compelled to visit the battlefield. While walking through a field called "Sunken Road," Keene had the following strange reaction:
"A wave of grief, sadness and anger washed over me. Without warning, I was suddenly being consumed by sensations. Burning tears ran down my cheeks. It became difficult to breathe. I gasped for air, as I stood transfixed in the old roadbed. To this day I could not tell you how much time transpired, but as these feelings, this emotional overload passed, I found myself exhausted as if I had run a marathon. Crawling up the steep embankment to get out of the road, I turned and looked back.
I was a bit shaken to say the least and wondered at what had just taken place. It was difficult getting back to the car because I felt so weak. I did not have any answers, just questions. I would one day receive my answers, but not until more than a year later and then from a most unusual source..."
Now I did contact Mr. Keene and told him of my event and he did remark that this is a very spectacular world we live in. In fact it is recorded that several officers did die at The Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg), so more than likely this is where one of my past lives had taken place and had ended. I have not done research into this but now I am more interested in knowing the facts.
I am sure the scientific community will have their say - but all I can say to their definitions is that defining things is all they do. They just define what is happening in life. They still cannot fully explain anything, because if they could all diseases would be cured.
All I know is that these NDE's happened to me and I don't think that I am that creative enough to orchestrate a Civil War event or request chocolate covered cheeseburgers. There is plenty more to this story but right now I am blessed in some way to be here to tell this story.
And this is the reason for my belief in parallel Universes or the . Because I believe if I died than I would have gone to one or the other place that the Bible defines (Heaven or Hell).
But as a scientist my free will beliefs go for the parallel Universes.
I may not be the best writer but I am currently seeking a ghost writer to write my full story of events in my life that science can not explain but are true to my life.
