Apple's updated Android 'Switch' campaign explains why people move to iPhone

Apple and Android may forever be locked in a fight for mobile domination, but they take very different approaches to their quest for market share. On the one hand, there are more than 2 billion active Android devices in use around the world. On the other, Apple makes gobs of money from selling just a handful of handsets. But like the PC wars of the 90s, Apple isn’t content with such a slim slice of the market. While it has had a Move to iOS...

Hex Nut Spinner

The design was kinda arbitrary. After deciding to use the 22 mm bearing, I found six 1/2" hex nuts in my junk drawer so I worked around those dimensions. The overall diameter (3.88") is on the large size for spinners. If you are building this for your kid, you might want to do some finger measurements first. All joints are press/interference fit (no glue). The part printed slightly smaller than the CAD file so I had to spend about 5 minutes...

As The Battleground For Warfare Moves To Cyberspace, DOD Contemplates Altering Recruitment Requirements

While we've viewed much of the hyped up discussions about cyberwarfare with some trepidation here, we now live in a reality where it would be clearly silly to suggest that the internet and internet-connected devices are not an emerging battleground for rival nations. While much was made these past few years about what mostly amounted to the penetration of private business networks, the discussion about several democratic elections throughou...

It's Time For The FCC To Actually Listen: The Vast Majority Of FCC Commenters Support Net Neutrality

The vast majority of consumers (from both parties) support net neutrality. This has been supported repeatedly not only by independent polls , but even the cable industry's own surveys . Yet for most of the last decade, ISP lobbyists and think tankers have managed to frame the subject in the media as a partisan one -- quite successfully using the country's deep political divisions to fuel disagreement and stall real progress. In reality, our...

You know, the one accusing Levandowski of swiping 14,000 confidential documents from and taking them with him to Uber. First, Alsup rebuf...

A global cyberattack on hospitals and other organizations so far hasn’t crippled the U.S., an official says

A 'kill switch' is slowing the spread of WannaCry ransomware

Friday’s unprecedented ransomware attack may have stopped spreading to new machines -- at least briefly -- thanks to a "kill switch" that a security researcher has activated. The ransomware, called Wana Decryptor or WannaCry, has been found infecting machines across the globe . It works by exploiting a Windows vulnerability that the U.S. National Security Agency may have used for spying. The malware encrypts data on a PC and shows users a n...

Today’s Massive Ransomware Attack Was Mostly Preventable—Here’s How To Avoid It

Photo: Getty Ransomware may be mostly thought of as a (sometimes costly) nuisance, but when it hinders the ability of doctors and nurses to provide aid to those in need of emergency medical care, then it qualifies as armed robbery. On Friday, a quickly spreading, nasty piece of malware crossed mountains and oceans to infect more than 70,000 machines around the world in a matter of hours. Among those infected were more than a dozen hospitals...

Gersterbread

There are several recipes available on the internet, and they don't vary in ingredients, but in the sequence of operations. Some where flamed before letting the dough rise, some where right before the baking, some where coated with sourdough, some with salted water and some just with water. So I tried all possibilities out with a variety of smaller buns. I left out a coating with potato-starch wash, because I couldn't find an equivalent in ...

In April, Qualcomm lodged a motion to dismiss an antitrust complaint the FTC filed with the U.S. District Court of Northern California earlier this year . Alleging the chipmaker takes part i...

Echodyne’s pocket-sized radar may be the next must-have tech for drones (and drone hunters)

Just because we live in an age of many sensors doesn’t mean we always have the right one for the job. One in particular we’ve been lacking is a radar system that can detect obstacles and aircraft hundreds of meters out, yet fit comfortably on a small drone. The laws of physics, it seemed, prevented it — but Echodyne made it work anyway . And it’s ready to put out its first product. The problem isn’t that the drone in your back yard doesn’t ...

IDG Contributor Network: Does Twitter encourage a ‘no filter’ attitude?

I’m starting to hate Twitter these days. Since 2008, it’s been an ever-flowing channel of communication -- direct and unfiltered. Celebrities, basketball stars, and even Presidents can post with reckless abandon. We’ve been living in the age of unfiltered status updates for almost ten years now, but it makes me wonder if there is a better way to share thoughts spontaneously...but with a little more civility. As a recent example, President T...
